Finances of the College

For more than 180 years, Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ has continued to lead due not only to sound financial stewardship, but also the support of our alumni, families, and friends. However, there is more than can and must be done to ensure the values we all hold dear remain strong and resilient. These values are grounded in the belief that every student who desires to attend Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ and take advantage of all the College offers can do so regardless of the ability to pay.

How Ä¢¹½´«Ã½'s Budget is Funded

60% ($115.4 M) of Ä¢¹½´«Ã½'s annual budget comes from distribution of endowment earnings, while only 32% ($58.9 M) comes from net student revenue (tuition, fees, and financial aid). The remaining 7% ($12.4 M) comes from gifts, grants, and other sources.

How Ä¢¹½´«Ã½'s Budget is Spent

Annually, Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ spends 60% ($111 million) of its endowment earnings on faculty and staff and 27% ($53.1 million) goes to academic programs and utilities to support students and the College's mission. The remainder goes to debt service (7% or $12.7 million) and reserves (6% or $10.2 million).

 

Overall, distributions from the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ endowment currently fund 62% of the College’s annual operating budget, the highest proportion among Ä¢¹½´«Ã½â€™s 17 peer institutions. In FY2025, giving to endowed funds at Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ added $26.7 million to the endowment. Of endowment earnings, $115.4 million went to operations and $12 million went to reserves. The distribution is determined by a hybrid formula that combines steady growth and market value.
